Wedding Ceremonies

Unique wedding ceremonies

Weddings ceremonies are a time to share your love story with all the special people in your life.

And having a civil ceremony means you can do it your way. The wedding ceremony is often the part of the day which is given less attention than the rest but as a wedding celebrant I feel it’s just as important.

Your ceremony should paint a picture of who are as a couple and it my job as a wedding celebrant to give you the ideas and tools do this. Your wedding ceremony can be traditional, quirky, religious, musical, festival themed or whatever way you’d like. Having me as a civil celebrant also means you can have your wedding ceremony in any venue you desire: on the beach, up a mountain, in a village hall or even in your back garden (like I did).

Getting to know you as a couple is really important as it helps me to create the perfect wedding ceremony script. In our meeting before the wedding ceremony I like to find out about you as people – your hobbies/interest, you as a couple – the story of how you met, things you like to do together and the important people in your lives. Using all the information gives me ideas and helps me create the perfect script for your day.

Every ceremony is unique and personal to the couple but here’s some ideas of the kinds of thing you may expect from a civil ceremony:

  • An introduction including your story.
  • Readings or poems – these give the opportunity to involve special people in your lives with the ceremony. Be as creative as you like – use lyrics from songs, speeches from films. I also have many beautiful readings for you to choose from.
  • Vows – writing your own vows for one another is often the most memorable part of the ceremony.
  • Exchanging of rings – a central part of the ceremony. The ring is a symbol of the vows you have said.
  • Symbolic gestures – there are many you can choose from such as hand-fasting, sand ceremonies, and lighting a unity candle. Visit my blog on symbolic gestures for more ideas.

Of course this is just a guide to give you a few ideas for your wedding ceremony. No two wedding ceremonies are the same and as a wedding celebrant I endeavor to include whatever you like, there’s no rules or restriction for your wedding day.

One thing to note is that as a civil wedding celebrant my ceremonies are not legally binding so if you would like to be legally married you will need to have an additional ceremony at the registry office.

My suggestion is to do this before your day with a few chosen family members or friends. This is the way I did it and it means you get to have TWO wedding days, what’s not to like?!

If you have any questions about the wedding ceremonies I can create for you as a wedding celebrant please get in contact, no obligation. I am happy to simple give you some ideas for your special day.

Renewal of vows

Just like a wedding ceremony, a renewal of vows or commitment ceremony is a chance to get together with your closest family and friends to celebrate your ongoing love for each other.

Are you approaching a special anniversary? Did you have a wedding ceremony overseas and now want to celebrate with loved ones in this country? Do you want to commemorate a particular phase of life, perhaps moving somewhere new, or overcoming challenges together. Whatever the occasion a renewal of vows ceremony gives you the opportunity to tell the world why you love being married and of course have another party!

Why not include your children in the ceremony and make it a real family celebration. Because of the journey you’ve had together already I will have no shortage of ideas and we will work together to create the perfect civil ceremony for your day.

“We really wanted a service that would be personal and meaningful to us as a couple, not the average generic wedding ceremony! Nancy exceeded our expectations. She took the time to get to know and understand us as a couple. She brought warmth, humour and incredibly special memories to our day! She also had some fantastic suggestions to make the wedding ceremony even more personal and unforgettable. We can’t recommend Nancy as a Celebrant more highly, she was phenomenal!!!”
